Aspergers: A guide to Home Education

At Oxford Home Schooling we appreciate that the child with Asperger Syndrome can often face tremendous challenges in their daily school life. We know that they can find social interaction and communication difficult as well as interpreting the feelings of others which can all lead to possible conflict with their peers and teachers. Yet at the same time they may be of above average intellectual ability and often excel in specialist subjects.

We understand that there are very few guideline procedures within schools for teaching these children and that schools often do not draw on the specialist knowledge parents have of their childrens needs strengths and likely behaviour in a variety of situations. The consequent lack of understanding can have a dramatic effect on the childs self esteem, quality of education and his ability to achieve his full potential in the classroom.

Oxford Home Schooling may provide many advantages for the Asperger Syndrome child although we realise that this can be a very difficult decision for any parents to make.

The study hours are far more flexible, there is unlimited time to work on a particular topic (they would not have to stop at the end of a lesson!) and they are able to organize their own time. They are able to work in an environment in which they feel happy and safe and can avoid any possible conflict with teachers and their peers. Any frustration they feel may be reduced and this can help build the confidence and self esteem of many Asperger Syndrome children.

At Oxford Home Schooling we would be more than happy to discuss any of these issues with you as we feel that Home Schooling is definitely an option worth considering for the Asperger Syndrome child.
