Oxford Home Schooling offers an integrated KS3 Science course that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum for Years 7-9. It also meets the requirements of the UK 13+ Common Entrance standards and provides excellent preparation towards the Common Entrance exam. Written by an experienced science teacher, Dr Philip West, it includes brand new lesson content, activities and questions. The entire course follows an integrated approach to all three sciences with lessons on each of the 3 sciences following each other in rotation.
The course builds progressively: the Year 8 course refers back to subject content that appears in the Year 7 course, and the Year 9 course refers back to topics covered in Years 7 and 8. Year 8 and 9 students will also find the earlier course topics covered in good KS3 Science textbooks and can refer to these alongside the Year 8 and Year 9 course folders.
Students wanting to begin Ks3 Science in Year 8 should follow our Year 8 course. Students wanting to begin KS3 Science in Year 9 should follow our new Year 9 course.
The course assumes no prior knowledge of science and begins to prepare students for studying the GCSE/IGCSE syllabus both in terms of scientific knowledge and investigative skills.
The course is suitable for Oxford Home Schooling students who are beginning KS3 Science at Year 7 level. Students wanting to begin KS3 Science in Year 8 or Year 9 should follow our separate KS3 Science courses for Years 8 or 9.
The Year 7 course consists of 6 modules containing 24 lessons. There are 6 Tutor-marked Assignments including an investigation. The course also includes a pullout guide for Parents which contains answers to Self-assessment Tests and Activities.
The six modules are:
Students will need to have access to the internet in order to carry out some of the course activities, including project research. They will also need to carry out simple experiments (that could be done in the kitchen, for example) under adult supervision.
A reasonable level of proficiency in arithmetical skills is assumed.
Assessment is progressive via tutor-marked assignments at the end of each module.
