Optional Support for Online Learners
Study independently — with support available when you need it
Oxford Open Learning courses are designed so students can study successfully with their course subscription alone. Your subscription gives you access to the structured online course materials you need to work through your subject at home, at your own pace.
But independent study does not have to mean studying entirely on your own.
Many students benefit from extra guidance at key points in their course: asking a tutor a question, getting feedback on written work, checking exam technique, or receiving support with next steps such as UCAS. Our optional support services are designed to give students that extra help when it is useful, without forcing every learner into the same package.
You can begin with your course subscription and add support as your needs develop.
Your course subscription gives you the foundation
Every Oxford Open Learning course subscription gives students access to carefully structured learning materials. These are designed for flexible home study and allow students to make steady progress through the subject.
For many learners, this is enough to get started and build confidence.
Optional support is there for students who want more personal guidance, more feedback, or help preparing for specific goals such as exams or university applications.
With your course subscription, you can:
✅ Study at your own pace
✅ Access structured course materials online
✅ Fit learning around family, work, school or other commitments
✅ Add extra support only when you need it
Why add support?
Every student learns differently. Some are confident working independently. Others benefit from more regular contact, feedback and reassurance.
Optional support can help students:
✅ Stay motivated and on track
✅ Understand difficult topics more clearly
✅ Improve written answers and exam technique
✅ Receive feedback before assessments or exams
✅ Build confidence in independent learning
✅ Prepare for future study, exams or university applications
The aim is not to replace independent study. It is to strengthen it.
Support Options
Whether you are looking for Key Stage 3 home learning, GCSE or IGCSE preparation, or flexible A Level study, our courses are designed to help students learn confidently at home.
Email Tutor Support
Email Tutor Support is designed for students who want the reassurance of being able to ask course-related questions as they study.
It gives students access to academic guidance by email, helping them clarify topics, understand course content, and move forward when they are unsure.
This is ideal for students who are mostly comfortable studying independently but would value tutor backup when they need it.
- Have a question about part of your course
- Need clarification before moving on
- Want reassurance that you are approaching your work correctly
- Prefer written support rather than live lessons
- Want flexible academic help alongside your course subscription
Email Tutor Support is not intended to replace full tuition or scheduled lessons. It is there for focused academic questions and guidance connected to your current course.
Assignment Marking
Tutor-marked assignments help students understand how well they are progressing.
By submitting work for marking, students receive feedback from a tutor on their answers, helping them identify strengths, correct misunderstandings, and improve future work.
Assignment marking is especially useful for subjects where written explanations, structured answers or exam technique are important.
- Want feedback on your written work
- Are preparing for exams
- Need help improving longer answers
- Want to understand where marks are gained or lost
- Would like expert guidance before moving to the next stage of your course
Personal Tuition
Some students benefit from one-to-one support with a tutor.
Personal tuition can provide more focused help than email support. It is useful when a student needs a topic explained in more detail, wants help planning their study, or would benefit from direct teaching.
This can be especially helpful before exams, after a difficult section of the course, or when a student needs help building confidence.
Personal Tuition may help if you:
- Need a difficult topic explained clearly
- Want one-to-one academic guidance
- Would benefit from regular support
- Are preparing for an exam or assessment
- Need help building confidence in a subject
Examination Marking
Exam practice is one of the best ways to prepare for formal assessment.
Examination marking gives students the opportunity to complete exam-style work and receive feedback on their performance. This can help students understand how to improve their answers, manage exam technique, and focus revision where it is most needed.
Examination Marking may help if you:
- Need clarification before moving on
- WWant feedback on exam-style answers
- Need help improving timing or structure
- Want to understand how your work compares to exam expectations
- Are entering as a private candidate and want extra reassurance
Email Tutor Support is not intended to replace full tuition or scheduled lessons. It is there for focused academic questions and guidance connected to your current course.
UCAS and Sixth Form Tutor References
For students applying to university, a tutor reference can be an important part of the UCAS process.
Where appropriate, Oxford Home Schooling may be able to support eligible students with tutor references based on their course engagement, submitted work, and academic progress.
- Are applying to university
- Need an academic reference
- Have studied with Oxford Open Learning
- Have completed work that allows a tutor to comment on your progress
UCAS Mentoring (In development)
In development
UCAS Mentoring is being developed to provide additional support for students preparing for university applications.
This may include guidance around course choices, personal statements, application planning, and the steps involved in applying as an independent learner.
This service is not yet fully available, but it is part of our wider plan to support students beyond course access alone.
Find the right support for where you are now
You do not need to choose every support option at the start. Many students begin with their course subscription and add support later when they need extra guidance, feedback or reassurance.
Use this pathway to decide which type of support is most likely to help.
1. I’m getting started and working through the course
Recommended: Course subscription only
Your subscription gives you structured online course materials designed for independent home study. For many students, this is enough to begin confidently.
2. I’m stuck or unsure about part of the course
Recommended: Email Tutor Support
Use Email Tutor Support when you need to ask a course-related question, check your understanding, or get reassurance before moving on.
4. I need more direct one-to-one help
Recommended: Personal Tuition
Personal Tuition is best when you need a topic explained in more detail, want help planning your study, or would benefit from direct tutor guidance.
3. I want feedback on my written work
Recommended: Assignment Marking
Assignment Marking helps you understand how well you are progressing and where your answers can improve. It is especially useful for written answers, coursework-style tasks and exam preparation.
5. I’m preparing for exams
Recommended: Examination Marking
Examination Marking helps you practise exam-style answers and receive feedback on structure, timing, technique and subject knowledge.
6. I’m applying to university or sixth form
Recommended: UCAS and Sixth Form Tutor References
Tutor references may be available for eligible students where there is enough evidence of course engagement, submitted work and academic progress.
7. I need help planning my UCAS application
Recommended: UCAS Mentoring
UCAS Mentoring is being developed to support students with university course choices, personal statements, application planning and the steps involved in applying as an independent learner.
