Course overview
The course develops a detailed understanding of life at molecular, cellular, organism and ecosystem level. Students also learn to analyse experimental evidence, apply biological principles to unfamiliar situations and use mathematics in a biological context.

Course structure
Two first-year modules are followed by two advanced second-year modules.
Recommended study time
We normally recommend allowing two years to complete the course, including practical study, assignments, revision and examination preparation.
AS option
The first-year content also prepares students for AS Biology B specification 8BIO.
Assignments
Examination-style assignments test knowledge, application, calculations, data analysis and extended writing.
Practical content
Eight are studied during the first year and a further eight during the second year.
Final assessment
The papers assess content from across the complete two-year course, including practical and mathematical skills.
Mathematical skills
Mathematics is assessed in a biological context at approximately Higher Tier GCSE level.
The specification assumes that students have achieved at least grade C in GCSE or IGCSE Biology or Double Award Science. The course revisits relevant prior knowledge, but students without this background may need additional preparation.
The first year of the A-level course contains the same content as the standalone AS Biology B qualification. Students may choose to sit the AS examinations after their first year for examination practice or to obtain an interim qualification.
AS marks do not contribute towards the final A-level. Students continuing to the full A-level must still sit all three A-level papers at the end of the complete course, and separate examination fees apply to the optional AS entry.
There is no separate practical examination. Questions about experimental design, techniques, observations, results and evaluation are included within the written papers.
The course supports this through suitable home practicals, detailed textbook material, videos and photographs of laboratory procedures.
A-level Biology involves approximately 700 hours of study. Most students should therefore plan to complete the course over two academic years rather than attempting to compress the full specification into a single year.
This allows time to develop the required biological knowledge, mathematical skills, practical understanding and examination technique, while revisiting first-year material throughout the second year.
Pearson also allows centres to assess practical competency internally and report a separate pass alongside the A-level grade. Oxford Home Schooling cannot conduct this internal assessment.
The endorsement is separate from the A-level grade. A student can still receive an A-level grade and certificate without it, and its absence does not reduce the examination grade.
How the course works
Work through the lessons in sequence, using the Oxford Home Schooling materials alongside the required textbooks. Each module combines biological theory, practical methods, mathematical work, data analysis and examination-style questions.
Start with biological molecules, cells, reproduction, exchange, transport and biodiversity. These modules also form the complete AS course.
Each lesson identifies relevant textbook reading, activities, keywords, practical work and examination questions.
The second year develops respiration, photosynthesis, microbiology, genetics, homeostasis, nervous control and ecosystem analysis.
Revise both years together, practise mathematical and practical questions and complete all three practice papers under timed conditions.
Optional extra support
Assignment marking, practice-paper marking, Email Tutor Support and one-to-one tutorials can be added when you need feedback on biological explanations, calculations, data analysis, practical methods or examination technique.
What you’ll study
The first year establishes the molecular, cellular and physiological foundations of Biology. The second year develops advanced biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, control systems, evolution and ecology.
Modules 1 and 2 contain 23 lessons and eight Core Practicals. They prepare students for the optional AS Biology B examinations and also form the first half of the full A-level course.
Modules 3 and 4 add 18 lessons and eight further Core Practicals. The final examinations assess this advanced material together with the complete first-year course.
Biological concepts and investigative skills build progressively throughout the course. Later lessons assume knowledge of molecular Biology, cells, enzymes, membranes, exchange and transport introduced during the first year.
The final examinations are synoptic. Students must retain and apply first-year material while studying the advanced second-year topics.
Exams and assessment
The full A-level is assessed through three written papers taken at the end of the two-year course. The papers include multiple-choice, short-answer, open-response, calculation, practical and extended-writing questions.
Paper 1
Advanced Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics assesses Module 3 together with relevant material from the complete first-year course.
Paper 2
Advanced Physiology, Evolution and Ecology assesses Module 4 together with relevant material from the complete first-year course.
Paper 3
General and Practical Principles in Biology is synoptic and assesses the complete two-year course, with particular emphasis on experimental design and the interpretation of biological evidence.
Assessment point
The complete first- and second-year content is examined in one final set of A-level papers.
Practical skills
Students answer questions about techniques, experimental design, variables, observations, data and evaluation.
Mathematical assessment
Mathematics is applied to biological data, calculations, graphs, rates, ratios, statistics and experimental results.
Practical endorsement
Oxford Home Schooling does not provide the internally assessed endorsement, but this does not prevent students receiving an A-level grade and certificate.
Examination entry
Course enrolment does not automatically enter you for the examinations. Private candidates should locate a centre willing to enter them for Pearson Edexcel A-level Biology B specification 9BIO.
Confirm the centre’s entry arrangements, fees and deadlines well in advance. Students considering the optional AS examinations must arrange a separate entry for specification 8BIO.
Core Cellular Biology and Microbiology lasts 90 minutes, carries 80 marks and contributes 50% of the standalone AS qualification. It assesses Module 1.
Core Physiology and Ecology lasts 90 minutes, carries 80 marks and contributes 50% of the standalone AS qualification. It assesses Module 2.
Students who sit the AS papers and continue to the full A-level must still complete all three A-level examinations. No AS marks are carried forward.

There are three written papers. Papers 1 and 2 each last 1 hour 45 minutes and contribute 30%. Paper 3 lasts two hours and contributes 40%.
Practical understanding is an important part of the qualification. The course covers 16 Core Practicals through suitable home activities, textbook descriptions, videos and photographs.
Examination questions assume familiarity with the principles, methods and interpretation of these practicals.
A microscope is not essential for completing the course because relevant procedures can be studied through videos and photographs.
However, three first-year Core Practicals involve microscopy, so access to a suitable microscope would provide valuable additional hands-on experience.
No. The separate Science Practical Endorsement requires internal observation and assessment by an approved centre and cannot be provided through this distance-learning course.
The endorsement is reported separately and does not form part of the A-level examination grade. Students can still receive an A-level grade and certificate without it.
At least 10% of the examination marks assess Mathematics in a biological context. The required standard broadly corresponds to Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics.
