KS3 Spanish home study for Years 7, 8 and 9
Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and an excellent subject for Key Stage 3 students. Learning Spanish helps students understand how languages work, communicate with more confidence and develop an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Our KS3 Spanish courses are written for independent study and cover the main vocabulary, grammar and language skills needed across Key Stage 3. Students build confidence gradually through reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar practice, activities and regular assignments.
The courses are suitable for home educated students, students who are temporarily out of school, and students who want additional support outside the classroom. The aim is to help students enjoy learning Spanish and prepare for GCSE-level study.
Choose the right KS3 Spanish year
Key Stage 3 covers Years 7, 8 and 9, but students do not always fit neatly into a single year group. Some students may be new to Spanish and need to start with the basics, while others may already know some vocabulary and be ready for more grammar, longer texts and more confident communication.
You can choose the course that best matches your child’s current Spanish knowledge and confidence rather than simply their age.
Year 7 Spanish
A good starting point for students beginning Key Stage 3 Spanish. Year 7 introduces greetings, numbers, birthdays, family, personality, pets, hobbies, weather, sports, school subjects, school facilities, family description, home, town, café language and weekend plans.
Year 8 Spanish
Year 8 Spanish develops students’ confidence with past, present and near future language. Students study holidays, television, music, technology, films, books, famous Spanish people, food, restaurants, parties, going out, clothes, home, town and revision.
Year 9 Spanish
Year 9 Spanish is the final stage of the Key Stage 3 course and helps students prepare for GCSE study. Students explore likes, weekly routines, films, birthdays, celebrity life, jobs, future plans, healthy living, rights, fast fashion, recycling, town changes, childhood and revision.
When choosing a KS3 Spanish course, think about:
- your child’s current confidence with Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation
- whether they are new to Spanish or have studied it before
- how comfortable they are with reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks
- whether they are ready for more grammar, including past and future tenses
- how soon they are likely to move on to GCSE Spanish

Across KS3 Spanish, students build the core language skills needed for confident communication, including:

- free time, hobbies, weather, sports and opinions
- school subjects, school facilities and daily routines
- home, town, cafés, food, restaurants and going out

- children’s rights, fair trade, fast fashion, recycling and the wider world

The aim is not just to memorise vocabulary, but to help students understand how Spanish works and become more confident using the language in practical situations.
KS3 Spanish Year 7
Year 7 Spanish introduces students to the foundations of Key Stage 3 Spanish. Students begin with greetings, numbers, birthdays, age, brothers and sisters, personality, pets, hobbies, weather and sports.
They then move on to school subjects, school facilities, school routine, family, descriptions, home, town, café language and weekend plans. The course helps students build confidence with everyday vocabulary, simple grammar, opinions and short written answers.
KS3 Spanish Year 8
Year 8 Spanish develops the skills introduced in Year 7 and gives students more practice using Spanish across a wider range of everyday situations.
Students study holidays, cultural activities, television, music, technology, films, books, famous Spanish people, food, mealtimes, restaurants, parties, going out, clothing, home and town. The course also develops confidence with the preterite, present and near future tenses.
KS3 Spanish Year 9
Year 9 Spanish is the final stage of the Key Stage 3 course and helps students prepare for GCSE Spanish.
Students study likes and dislikes, weekly routines, films, birthdays, celebrity life, jobs, future plans, healthy living, daily routine, rights, fast fashion, fair trade, recycling, town changes and childhood.
The course brings together key vocabulary and grammar, including the present, preterite, near future and imperfect tenses, helping students develop confidence before moving on to GCSE-level study.
How the course is structured
Each KS3 Spanish year is divided into modules covering key vocabulary, grammar and communication skills. Lessons include clear aims, context, reading, activities and opportunities to check understanding.
Students work through written activities, grammar practice, listening and speaking links, internet activities and self-assessment tests. The course includes optional web links which often provide speaking or listening practice and the chance to hear native speakers of Spanish.
Assignments are linked to the course so students can check their progress. Tutor marking and feedback is available as an optional add-on, allowing families to choose whether they would like submitted work to be marked by a tutor.
Spanish works best when students practise little and often. Parent or guardian involvement can be especially helpful, as language learning benefits from regular speaking, listening and review. Suggested answers and self-assessment materials can also help families support day-to-day study.

A strong Key Stage 3 foundation makes GCSE Spanish much easier to approach. Students who understand core vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and sentence structure are better prepared for the more demanding language work they will meet later.
Our KS3 Spanish courses help students build this foundation gradually. They study everyday topics such as family, school, hobbies, home, town, food, holidays, culture, jobs, health and the wider world, while learning how to use Spanish in different tenses.
Year 9 Spanish is particularly useful for students approaching GCSE study. It brings together the key skills developed across Key Stage 3 and introduces more advanced topics and grammar, including healthy living, jobs, rights, recycling, town changes, childhood, the imperfect tense and revision.

Can my child study KS3 Spanish from home?
Yes. Our KS3 Spanish courses are designed for flexible home study. Students work through structured lessons from home, covering vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking and cultural topics.
The course includes activities, internet links, self-assessment tests and assignments, helping students build their Spanish skills step by step.
Which KS3 Spanish year should my child start with?
Most students start with the course that broadly matches their school year: Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9. However, it is often better to choose based on previous Spanish study and current confidence rather than age alone.
A student who is new to Spanish should usually start with Year 7, while a student who already has some Spanish vocabulary and grammar may be ready for Year 8 or Year 9.
Does my child have to start with Year 7?
No. The year labels are a guide. If your child already has a good foundation in Spanish, they may be ready for Year 8 or Year 9. If they are new to Spanish, or need to rebuild confidence with the basics, Year 7 is likely to be the better starting point.
Can my child study different year levels in different subjects?
Yes. Many home-educated students work at different levels in different subjects. Your child might be ready for Year 8 Spanish while studying Year 7 Maths, or vice versa. The best choice is the level that matches their current confidence and skills.
Does KS3 Spanish prepare students for GCSE?
Yes. KS3 Spanish helps students build the vocabulary, grammar and communication skills they need before moving on to GCSE Spanish.
Year 9 Spanish is particularly useful for students preparing for GCSE study, as it brings together key vocabulary and grammar from across Key Stage 3 and gives students more practice using different tenses and wider topics.
What will my child study in KS3 Spanish?
Students study a wide range of everyday Spanish topics. Across Years 7, 8 and 9, this includes greetings, numbers, birthdays, family, pets, hobbies, weather, sports, school, home, town, cafés, holidays, culture, food, restaurants, going out, jobs, healthy living, rights, recycling and childhood.
Students also develop important language skills, including reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation, grammar and using Spanish in different tenses.
Do we need to buy extra textbooks?
No. The KS3 Geography course materials are designed to provide students with what they need for effective study. From time to time, students may be directed towards useful websites, books or further reading, but these are not normally required purchases.
Is parent or guardian involvement useful?
Yes. Spanish is a communication subject, so regular practice can make a big difference. Parents or guardians can help by encouraging short, regular study sessions, listening to spoken practice where possible, and helping students review their work.
Suggested answers and self-assessment materials can also help families support day-to-day study, even if the parent or guardian does not speak fluent Spanish.
Is tutor support available?
Yes. Tutor-marked assignments and additional academic support are available on many KS3 courses.
Tutor-marked assignments are useful because they give students clear feedback on how well they are understanding the course. They also help parents see whether their child is making good progress, where they may need more practice, and whether they are ready to move on to the next stage.
Tutorials can also be helpful, especially when a student has lost confidence, is finding a topic difficult, or would benefit from talking something through with a subject specialist. A tutorial gives the student a chance to ask questions, receive guidance and feel less isolated while studying from home.
Are printed materials available?
Yes. Printed course materials are available on KS3 courses for students who prefer working from paper as well as online.
Paper-based materials can be helpful for students who find it tiring to read everything on screen, who concentrate better with a physical workbook, or who like to highlight, annotate and make notes by hand. They can also make home study feel more structured, especially for younger students who benefit from having a clear folder of work to follow.
Many families use the online course and printed materials together, so the student has the flexibility of digital access while still being able to work from paper when that suits them better.
Are online video resources included?
The Geography courses include links to supporting Twig/ClickView resources. These films can help students explore geographical topics in more depth and add variety to the learning experience.
These resources are optional extras. The course materials are designed to be complete without them, so students can still study successfully even if they do not use every video resource.
What is the minimum subscription period?
Our course subscriptions have a minimum subscription period of six months. After that, subscriptions can usually be cancelled in line with the subscription terms.
Are tutor-marked assignments included?
Assignments are built into the course structure so students can check their progress. Tutor marking and feedback is available as an optional add-on. This gives families the flexibility to decide whether they would like work to be submitted for tutor feedback.
