Course overview

Question familiar ideas and recognise wider social patterns

A-level Sociology investigates how social groups, institutions and cultural expectations influence people’s lives. You will examine the relationship between individuals and society while considering the effects of class, gender, ethnicity, age, education, family background and economic inequality.

The course explores families and households, education, health, wealth and poverty, beliefs, media, global development, stratification, crime and deviance. You will also study the theories and research methods sociologists use to investigate social life.

Sociology requires more than expressing personal opinions. You will learn to use sociological concepts, theories and evidence to construct arguments, evaluate competing explanations and reach supported conclusions.

Flexible home study

How the A-level Sociology course works

Begin with the introductory lessons on Sociology and research methods before moving through culture, family life, inequality, education, health, religion, crime and sociological theory.

Lessons contain self-tuition questions, activities, sociological studies and practice essays. You will learn to identify important theories and evidence, apply them to particular social issues and evaluate the strengths and limitations of competing explanations.

Continuous revision is important because themes recur throughout the course. Ideas about social class, power, gender, education, poverty and family background may help explain topics as different as religion, health and crime.

Evidence matters more than personal opinion

Your own experiences can help you question sociological ideas, but examination answers must use recognised theories, concepts, research and evidence. Strong responses compare explanations and evaluate how convincingly they account for the issue in question.
