KS3 Maths home study for Years 7, 8 and 9

Maths is one of the most important subjects at Key Stage 3. A strong understanding of number, algebra, geometry, statistics and problem solving helps students prepare for GCSE and gives them confidence across many other subjects.

Our KS3 Maths courses are written for independent study, with clear explanations and activities that help students work through each topic step by step. They are suitable for home educated students, students who are temporarily out of school, and students who want additional support outside the classroom.

Choose the right KS3 Maths year

Key Stage 3 covers Years 7, 8 and 9, but students do not always fit neatly into a single year group. Some students may need to consolidate earlier topics, while others may be ready to move ahead.

You can choose the course that best matches your child’s current level rather than simply their age.

Year 7 Maths

A good starting point for students beginning Key Stage 3. Year 7 Maths builds on primary school knowledge and introduces more formal secondary-level approaches to number, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, shape and data.

Year 8 Maths

Year 8 Maths develops confidence and fluency, with more demanding work in algebra, proportional reasoning, geometry, probability and problem solving. It is suitable for students who already have a secure foundation in Year 7 topics.

Year 9 Maths

Year 9 Maths helps students prepare for the move towards GCSE. The course strengthens key skills and introduces more advanced problem-solving techniques across number, algebra, graphs, geometry, statistics and probability.

When choosing a KS3 Maths course, think about:

  • your child’s confidence with number, fractions and basic calculations
  • whether they need to rebuild confidence before moving on
  • whether they are ready for more algebra, geometry and problem solving
  • how comfortable they are working independently through examples and activities
  • how soon they are likely to move on to GCSE-level Maths

How our KS3 Maths home study courses work

1.Choose the right year level

Select the Maths course that best matches your child’s confidence, experience and readiness, rather than relying only on their school year.

2. Start studying online

Once enrolled, students get access to structured online course materials, with lessons, activities, self-assessment questions and assignments.

3. Add support when needed

Many students choose to add printed course packs, tutor-marked assignments or extra academic support as they work through the course.

4. Build towards GCSE

KS3 Maths helps students develop the knowledge, confidence and written skills that can support later GCSE study.

What students will study in KS3 Maths

Across KS3 Maths, students work through the main areas of the Key Stage 3 curriculum, including:

✓ Number and place value
✓ Fractions, decimals and percentages
✓ Ratio and proportion
✓ Algebra and equations
✓ Sequences and graphs
✓ Shape, space and measure
✓ Angles, area and volume
✓ Statistics and probability
✓ Mathematical reasoning and problem solving

The aim is not just to complete exercises, but to help students understand how Maths works and how to apply it with confidence.

KS3 Maths Year 7

Year 7 Maths introduces students to the foundations of Key Stage 3 Maths. Students begin with the number system, addition and subtraction of whole numbers, co-ordinates, transformations, multiplication and division.

They then move on to multiples, factors, BIDMAS, angles, quadrilaterals, polygons, perimeter, area, volume, fractions, algebra and decimals. This is a good starting point for students beginning KS3 Maths or rebuilding confidence with core skills.

KS3 Maths Year 8

Year 8 Maths develops the skills introduced in Year 7 and gives students more practice with measure, geometry, algebra and problem solving.

Students cover metric and imperial units, distance, complex shapes, angles, symmetry, nets, ratio, proportion and percentages. They also develop their algebra through multiplication and division, brackets, factorising, formulae and equations, before working on triangles and presenting information.

KS3 Maths Year 9

Year 9 Maths is the final stage of the Key Stage 3 course and helps students prepare for GCSE or IGCSE Maths.

Students study graphwork, loci, sequences, indices, standard form, squares, roots, reciprocals, algebraic fractions, brackets, trigonometry, ratio and proportion, bearings, averages, probability and cumulative frequency.

The year ends with a revision and overview project, helping students bring together the skills they have developed across Key Stage 3 before moving on to GCSE-level study.

How the course is structured

The KS3 Maths course is divided into three one-year sections: Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9. Each year is divided into six modules, with a tutor-marked assignment linked to each module so students can check their progress as they work through the course.

The course materials include clear lesson aims, explanations of why each topic matters, activities to help students practise the skills covered, and suggested weblinks for extra support. Some lessons also include self-assessment activities to help students review their understanding.

Tutor marking and feedback for assignments is available as an optional add-on. This allows families to choose whether they would like submitted work to be marked by a tutor, with feedback to help the student understand what they have done well and where they can improve.

Maths is best learned step by step. Students should work carefully through the lessons in order, attempt the activities, learn from mistakes, and only move on when they are confident with the skills they have covered.

Preparing for GCSE Maths

A secure Key Stage 3 foundation makes GCSE Maths much easier to approach. Students who understand the basics of algebra, fractions, percentages, graphs and geometry are better prepared for the more demanding work they will meet later.

Our Year 9 Maths course is particularly useful for students who are approaching GCSE study and want to strengthen their skills before starting a GCSE Maths course.

When your child is ready, they can move on to one of our GCSE Maths options.

KS3 Maths home study FAQs

Why should I choose Oxford Home Schooling?

  • Rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot by students and families
  • Online and printed resources available on many courses
  • Flexible study with tutor support and interest-free monthly payments
Can my child study KS3 Maths from home?

Yes. KS3 Maths can be studied from home using structured online course materials. Our courses are designed for students who need a flexible alternative to classroom learning.

Which KS3 Maths year should my child start with?

The right starting point depends on your child’s confidence, previous study and readiness. Their school year can be a guide, but students do not always need to study the same year level in every subject.

Does my child have to start with Year 7?

No. If your child already has a good foundation in Maths, they may be ready for Year 8 or Year 9. If they have gaps or have lost confidence, starting at an earlier level may be more helpful.

Can my child study different year levels in different subjects?

Yes. A student might be ready for Year 9 History but need Year 8 Maths or Year 7 English. Home study allows you to choose the most suitable level for each subject.

Does KS3 Maths prepare students for GCSE?

Yes. KS3 Maths helps students build knowledge, confidence and skills that can support later GCSE Maths study.

Is tutor support available?

Yes. Tutor-marked assignments and additional academic support are available on many KS3 courses.

Tutor-marked assignments are useful because they give students clear feedback on how well they are understanding the course. They also help parents see whether their child is making good progress, where they may need more practice, and whether they are ready to move on to the next stage.

Tutorials can also be helpful, especially when a student has lost confidence, is finding a topic difficult, or would benefit from talking something through with a subject specialist. A tutorial gives the student a chance to ask questions, receive guidance and feel less isolated while studying from home.

Are printed materials available?

Yes. Printed course materials are available on KS3 courses for students who prefer working from paper as well as online.

Paper-based materials can be helpful for students who find it tiring to read everything on screen, who concentrate better with a physical workbook, or who like to highlight, annotate and make notes by hand. They can also make home study feel more structured, especially for younger students who benefit from having a clear folder of work to follow.

Many families use the online course and printed materials together, so the student has the flexibility of digital access while still being able to work from paper when that suits them better.

What is the minimum subscription period?

Our course subscriptions have a minimum subscription period of six months. After that, subscriptions can usually be cancelled in line with the subscription terms.
