Course overview
Build strong mathematical foundations through a structured home-study course covering number, geometry, fractions, algebra and decimals, with regular practice and assessment throughout.
Course level
The first year of Oxford Home Schooling’s three-year Key Stage 3 Maths programme.
Course structure
Work progressively through number, geometry, fractions, algebra and decimals.
Learning approach
Mathematical ideas are introduced step by step so that each new skill builds securely on what has already been learned.
Practice
Every lesson contains questions and activities designed to develop understanding through regular mathematical practice.
Assignments
Each module ends with a Tutor-marked Assignment to help students and parents monitor progress.
Assessment
Progress is checked through activities, self-assessment and Tutor-marked Assignments rather than a final exam.
Study pace
Students can spend longer on difficult topics or move ahead more quickly once they have mastered the necessary skills.
Progression
The full Key Stage 3 course is designed to build towards later GCSE or IGCSE Maths study.
The important thing is to master each skill before moving on. Home study allows students to spend the time they need on each topic rather than being tied to the pace of a classroom.
How it works
Work through a carefully ordered sequence of lessons and activities, mastering each mathematical skill before moving on to the next stage of the course.
Enrol at any time and receive immediate access to your online course. Your included academic induction session helps you understand the course and plan your studies.
Each lesson sets out clear aims and explains why the topic matters. Work carefully through the material in order so that each new skill builds on secure understanding.
Activities throughout each lesson give you opportunities to practise new techniques. Answers are provided so you can check your work and learn from mistakes.
Self-assessment activities and Tutor-marked Assignments help confirm that important skills have been understood before you progress to more advanced Maths.
Flexible additional support
The course can be studied independently using the lesson materials and activities. Tutor marking, email support, one-to-one tutorials and printed materials can be purchased separately when useful.
What you’ll study
The Year 7 course contains six modules and 15 structured lessons, beginning with the number system before progressing through geometry, fractions, algebra and decimals.
The lessons are intended to be studied in order. Each new skill builds on earlier understanding, so students should aim to master each topic before progressing to the next.
Assessment and progress
There is no final examination at Key Stage 3. Instead, understanding is checked throughout the course through lesson activities, self-assessment and a Tutor-marked Assignment at the end of each module.
Tutor-marked assignments
Each module ends with a Tutor-marked Assignment, giving students and parents a clear indication of how well the mathematical skills in that part of the course have been understood.
Self-assessment
Some lessons include self-assessment activities, while lesson activities and answers allow students to check their work and identify anything they need to practise again.
Final assessment
Year 7 Maths focuses on mastering the skills taught during the course rather than preparing for an external examination.
Working method
Students are encouraged to set out each stage clearly so they develop both accurate answers and sound mathematical reasoning.
Practice
Regular practice helps students encounter different versions of a problem and become more confident and flexible.
Individual progress
Students can spend longer on topics they find difficult and progress more quickly when skills have already been mastered.
Progress through Key Stage 3
Year 7 establishes the numerical, geometrical and algebraic foundations that students will develop further in Years 8 and 9 before progressing towards GCSE or IGCSE Maths.
Support & add-ons
Your course subscription provides the structured online materials needed for independent study. Additional tutor support, marking and printed materials can be purchased separately whenever they would be useful.

Submit individual course assignments and receive tutor feedback on mathematical methods, accuracy, working, understanding and areas that need further practice.
Assignment marking bundle£53.95
Independent practice
Activities are built into the lessons, with answers provided so students can check their work, understand mistakes and practise each mathematical technique.
Lesson practice Included with the course
Ongoing guidance
Ask Maths questions by email while working through the course and receive help when a method, calculation or mathematical idea needs further explanation.

Yes. You can enrol and begin studying when it suits you, then work through the course at a pace that matches your existing knowledge and confidence.
Year 7 contains 15 lessons arranged across six modules. Topics include the number system, geometry, fractions, algebra and decimals.
No. Students develop mathematical skills at different speeds. Home study allows them to spend longer on areas they find difficult or move ahead more quickly when they are ready.
No. Key Stage 3 is not an external examination course. Progress is checked through lesson activities, self-assessment and Tutor-marked Assignments.
There are six Tutor-marked Assignments in Year 7, with one assignment at the end of each module.
The course materials include all six Tutor-marked Assignments. Tutor marking is purchased separately, allowing you to add marking when it would be useful.
Students are encouraged to slow down, practise the technique and make sure they understand their mistakes before moving on. Suggested weblinks can also provide alternative explanations of many topics.
Yes. Optional support includes assignment marking, Email Tutor Support and one-to-one online tutorials, so extra help can be added when a particular topic needs further explanation.
Yes. Mathematics builds progressively, so the course recommends working through the lessons in order and mastering each skill before moving to the next.
Students can continue into Years 8 and 9 of the Oxford Home Schooling Key Stage 3 Maths course. By the end of the full programme, they should be well placed to begin GCSE or IGCSE Maths.
