Each lesson sets out clear aims and combines reading, writing, activities and language work. Starter exercises steadily develop grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary.
Activities and self-assessment exercises help you review what you have learned, while Tutor-marked Assignments provide regular opportunities to demonstrate your progress.
Build greater confidence in analysing texts, developing arguments and writing accurately as you prepare for Year 9 and more advanced secondary English.
Flexible additional support
The course can be studied independently using the lesson materials, activities and suggested answers. Tutor marking, email support, one-to-one tutorials and printed materials can be purchased separately when useful.
What you’ll study
The course is organised into six modules and 30 structured lessons, moving from literary non-fiction through novels, drama and poetry to media, persuasive writing and a final extended novel study.
Alongside the main lesson content, starter activities continually reinforce grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and accurate written expression.
Assessment and progress
There is no final examination at Key Stage 3. Instead, students check their understanding throughout the course through activities, self-assessment and Tutor-marked Assignments designed to show how their reading, writing and language skills are developing.
Tutor-marked assignments
Tutor-marked assignments are spread throughout the course and give students and parents a clear indication of how well learning and written skills are progressing.
Self-assessment
Self-assessment activities test recall and understanding of lesson content and accompanying texts, helping students identify areas they may need to revisit.
Final assessment
Year 8 English is assessed through work completed during the course rather than through an external or end-of-year examination.
Written English
Students practise descriptive, persuasive, analytical and creative writing across a wide variety of contexts.
Technical English
Starter activities develop grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and accurate use of English.
