Course overview
Explore Biology, Chemistry and Physics through a structured home-study course that also develops practical skills and an understanding of how scientific investigations are designed, carried out and interpreted.
Course level
The first year of Oxford Home Schooling’s three-year Key Stage 3 Science programme.
Course structure
Each module combines Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Scientific Investigation.
Science subjects
Develop a broad understanding of the three main sciences rather than studying them in isolation.
Scientific investigation
Investigation lessons develop the skills needed to plan scientific work, collect evidence and interpret results.
Practical work
Practical activities use accessible equipment wherever possible and help turn scientific ideas into experience.
Assignments
Every module concludes with a Tutor-marked Assignment designed to show how well students are progressing.
Assessment
Self-assessment activities appear throughout the course alongside practical and written lesson activities.
Progression
The full KS3 programme provides a strong foundation for later GCSE or IGCSE Science study.
Alongside scientific knowledge, the course develops practical investigation skills so students learn how questions are tested, evidence is gathered and conclusions are reached.
How it works
Work through a clear sequence of scientific explanations, activities, practical work and investigations designed to build knowledge and scientific thinking together.
Enrol at any time and receive immediate access to your online course. Your included academic induction session helps you understand the course and plan your studies.
Work through Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons with clear aims, explanations and activities designed to develop understanding progressively.
Practical and investigation activities help you learn how scientific questions are designed, tested and interpreted, with adult supervision where appropriate.
Self-assessment and Tutor-marked Assignments provide regular opportunities to review what you have learned and identify areas that need more work.
Flexible additional support
The course can be studied independently using the lesson materials and activities. Tutor marking, email support, one-to-one tutorials and printed materials can be purchased separately when useful.
What you’ll study
The Year 7 course contains six modules and 24 structured lessons, combining Biology, Chemistry and Physics with a continuing strand of scientific investigation.
Each module combines Biology, Chemistry and Physics with scientific investigation, allowing subject knowledge and practical scientific skills to develop together.
Assessment and progress
There is no final examination in the course. Instead, students check their understanding regularly through lesson activities, self-assessment and a Tutor-marked Assignment at the end of every module.
Tutor-marked assignments
Every module concludes with a written Tutor-marked Assignment, giving students and parents a regular indication of how well scientific knowledge and skills are developing.
Self-assessment
Lessons without a TMA include self-assessment activities designed to test what has been learned and provide a starting point for reviewing progress with a parent or guardian.
Scientific knowledge
Assessment checks understanding across all three sciences rather than concentrating on a single subject area.
Investigation skills
Students develop scientific reasoning alongside the practical skills needed to investigate questions methodically.
Practical Science
Practical activities help students connect scientific explanations with observation and experimentation.
Parent support
Parents’ Guides contain information about each lesson and suggested answers to the self-assessment activities.
Progress through Key Stage 3
Year 7 introduces the knowledge and investigation skills developed further through Years 8 and 9 before students progress towards GCSE or IGCSE Science.
Support & add-ons
Your course subscription provides the structured online materials and practical activities needed for independent study. Additional tutor support, marking and printed materials can be purchased separately whenever they would be useful.
Written feedback
Submit individual course assignments and receive tutor feedback on scientific knowledge, reasoning, investigation skills, written answers and areas that need further work.
