Key Stage 3 home study that fits around your child
Key Stage 3 covers the important years between primary education and GCSE study. It is the stage where students build stronger subject knowledge, develop more independent study habits and begin preparing for the demands of GCSE or IGCSE courses.
Our KS3 home study courses are designed to make that process clear and manageable. Each subject is divided into Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 courses, so families can choose the right starting point for each child and each subject.
This subject-by-subject approach is especially useful for home educated students. A child may be ready for Year 8 English but need Year 7 Maths, or may be confident in Science while needing more support in Spanish. With Oxford Home Schooling, you can choose the level that best matches your child’s current confidence and ability.
Choose your KS3 subject
We offer KS3 courses across seven subjects, each with separate Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 options. Choose a subject below to see the available courses and decide which year level is the best fit for your child.
Each subject page explains what students will study, how the course is structured, how it supports later GCSE study, and which year level may be the most suitable starting point.
Which KS3 year should my child start with?
Which KS3 year should my child start with?
Most students begin with the course that broadly matches their school year: Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9. However, home study gives families more flexibility. The right level is not always the one that matches a child’s age exactly.
Some students may need to rebuild confidence in a subject before moving forward. Others may already have strong knowledge and be ready for a more advanced year. This is why we recommend choosing each KS3 course based on confidence, previous study and readiness rather than age alone.
For example, a student could study Year 8 English, Year 7 Maths and Year 9 History at the same time if that is the best match for their current learning. The aim is to give each student a steady, achievable route towards GCSE-level study.
When choosing KS3 courses, think about:
- your child’s current confidence in each subject
- whether they need to strengthen earlier knowledge before moving on
- how independently they can read, write and complete activities
- whether they are ready for longer answers or more advanced topics
- how soon they are likely to move on to GCSE or IGCSE study

What is Key Stage 3?
Key Stage 3 usually covers Years 7, 8 and 9 in England and Wales. It is the stage between primary education and GCSE study, helping students build stronger subject knowledge, confidence and independent study habits.
Which KS3 subjects are available?
We offer KS3 home study courses in Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, Spanish and PSHE and Citizenship.
Each subject has its own information page, where you can see the available Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 courses and choose the level that best matches your child.
Which KS3 year should my child start with?
Most students start with the course that broadly matches their school year: Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9. However, home study gives families more flexibility, so it is often better to choose based on confidence, previous study and readiness rather than age alone.
A student who needs to strengthen earlier knowledge may benefit from starting with Year 7, while a confident student may be ready for Year 8 or Year 9.
Can my child study different year levels in different subjects?
Yes. Many home-educated students work at different levels in different subjects. Your child might be ready for Year 8 English while studying Year 7 Maths, or Year 9 History while studying Year 8 Science.
The best choice is the level that matches your child’s current confidence, knowledge and skills in each subject.
Does my child have to study every KS3 subject?
No. You can choose the individual subjects your child needs. Some families choose a broad KS3 programme, while others focus on a smaller number of subjects where their child needs structure, confidence or preparation for GCSE.
Can we start with one subject and add more later?
Yes. Many families begin with one or two subjects and add more once the student has settled into a regular study routine. This can be a good way to build confidence without taking on too much at once.
How long does a KS3 course take?
Each course is designed to provide structured study for a Key Stage 3 year level, but the exact pace will depend on the student, the subject and the amount of time available each week.
Home study allows families to work at a pace that suits the child, while still following a clear course structure.
Does KS3 prepare students for GCSE?
Yes. KS3 study helps students build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need before moving on to GCSE or IGCSE courses.
Year 9 courses are particularly useful for students who are approaching GCSE-level study, as they help consolidate Key Stage 3 knowledge and introduce more advanced skills.
Does the course include tutor support?
Yes. Tutor support is available to help students when they need advice, reassurance or feedback. Tutor marking and feedback for assignments is available as an optional add-on, so families can choose the level of support they want.
Can we get printed course materials?
All our courses offer optional printed course packs for students who prefer working from paper as well as online. Lonks to purchase options are shown on the individual course pages.
What is the minimum subscription period?
Our course subscriptions have a minimum subscription period of six months. After that, subscriptions can usually be cancelled in line with the subscription terms.
6 months is not how long we recommend the course takes. Most students subscribe between 9 and 18 months before sitting their exams.
